KPJ THE FIRST TO INTRODUCE PAIN MANAGEMENT SERVICES

KPJ Healthcare Berhad (KPJ) takes caring for patients to a whole new level when it launched Pain Management Services

KPJ Healthcare Berhad (KPJ) takes caring for patients to a whole new level when it launched Pain Management Services, the first of its kind, in KPJ Ampang Puteri Specialist Hospital (APSH) recently.

Signalling the commencement of the service, a team of medical specialists from APSH comprising of surgeons, physicians, orthopaedic surgeons, anaesthetists, pain physicians, medical practitioners and OT nurses were brought together and coached through a workshop called ‘Interventional Spinal Pain Management’, which highlighted the understanding and application of epidural neuroplasty principles and techniques. The one day workshop was launch by Managing Director of KPJ, Datin Paduka Siti Sa’diah Sheikh Bakir and had APSH’s Orthopaedic Surgeon, Dato’ Dr. Abd. Wahab Ghani and Dr. Patrick Mc Gowan, a Consultant Anaesthetist & Pain Physician from Barnet & Chase NHS Trust, United Kingdom as speakers.

The workshop which attracted more than 100 medical specialists and practitioners as attendees, discussed the subject of pain management method that is currently widely practiced by surgeons and anaesthetists worldwide. In a press conference prior to the workshop, Datin Paduka Siti Sa’diah Sheikh Bakir said, “It is timely that KPJ, as the largest provider in Malaysia’s healthcare industry, be the first to introduce this service in the country. KPJ is very concerned with clinical improvement to better our services for the benefit our patients. We wanted to be known not only as service providers, but as a caring hand as well.’’

Viewed as a clinical approach to patients’ wellbeing, this Pain Management Services offer a comprehensive treatment for patients who are dealing with chronic pain by offering them epidural and PCA treatment. Besides its therapeutic benefits, this interventional pain management is able to identify the source of pain. The treatment options include lysis of epidural adhesions, radiofrequency lesioning, nerve blocks for diagnosis treatment, rehabilitative services and psychological evaluation and treatment.

Datin Paduka Siti Sa’diah also mentioned that the implementation of the services is apt to keep up with the progressing technologies in medicine, as well as to fulfil the demands of the public. “We have been receiving queries from our patients as to whether hospitals in Malaysia can provide pain management services, when all this while they can only receive the services while seeking treatment in hospitals abroad. Hence, it is hoped that by introducing this service in APSH, patients will be able to receive the treatment with an affordable price tag”.
