Good response to KPJ's 'Cancer Health Talk'

The 'Cancer Health Talk' organised by KPJ Healthcare Sibu Specialist Medical Centre held here yesterday received overwhelming response. The talk was conducted by Consultant ENT, Head and Neck surgeon, Dr Vikneswaran Tharumalingam and Consultant General Surgeon, Dr Ooi Wei Keong.

Dr Vikneswaran spoke on nose cancer while Dr Ooi talked on breast cancer.

Dr Vikneswaran, with 19 years of working experience in the medical field, spent 15 years of those in the field of ENT, Head & Neck surgery making him one of the most respected ENT Surgeons in Sarawak.

Having worked 17 of those 19 years in Sarawak and being head of the ENT services for the past six years, he is intimately acquainted with the medical profession in the state and country.

The jovial Dr Vikneswaran's area of expertise is in allergy management, sleep related disorders, sinus diseases, thyroid, head and neck cancer surgery.

After obtaining a Masters in ENT, head and neck surgery from UKM in 2005, he proceeded to obtain his membership in Occupational Medicine from the Royal College of Physicians, Ireland in 2008.

In recognition of his expertise and work in the field of occupational medicine and ENT, he was conferred an Honorary Fellowship in occupational medicine from the same Royal College in 2012.

Dr Ooi who graduated from the National University of Malaysia with medical doctor degree in 2000, has undergone surgical training in Sibu General Hospital, Sarawak General Hospital, Pahang State Hospital (HTAA) and Hospital University Kebangsaan Malaysia (HUKM).

While pursuing his masters, he underwent training in paediatric surgery, urology, plastic surgery and neurosurgery as part of the requirement.

Dr Ooi obtained his Master in General Surgery in 2010 and has since been serving in Sibu General Hospital as resident sturgeon. He has 15 years' experience in general surgery with KKM hospitals.

He was also an invited examiner (surgical exam) for Unimas medical undergraduate examinations.

Dr Ooi's field of specialty includes general surgery, GI endoscopy (OGDS/ sigmoidoscopy/ colonoscopy) basic paediatric surgery, basic urology and oncological surgery.
