Orthopaedic surgeon Dr G. Ruslan Nazaruddin met us at his office in Tawakal Hospital, a member of the KPJ Healthcare Group. Dr Ruslan has been with Tawakal Hospital since 2000 and is one of the most well-known Orthopaedic surgeons in the country, and also in South-East Asia. Hailing from Bandung, Indonesia, he received his secondary education in Malaysia and has been here ever since. "My interest to become a doctor started when I entered Form 6. At that time we did matriculations and my target was to become a doctor if I passed, and I did!" he said. "I managed to enter medical school at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM)." The initial years were the toughest. "We had to learn English and we had such a stern professor! Out of eight students, only four went on, including me, but the professor is now my friend and mentor," he reminisced. |

| Health Tourism With medical and health tourism getting support from the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Tourism, Dr Ruslan also applauds the ministries' initiatives. "We are capable of giving so much at a more affordable price. For example, a total knee replacement in Singapore would cost around S$16,000 but in Malaysia it is only RM20, 000 - in terms of currency rate it is much cheaper here." There is also a long waiting period in other countries. In the UK, a person may have to wait up to a year to have an autoplastic surgery because of overwhelming demand. Here, you can get surgery done after a three-month wait. Dr Ruslan already has patients from as far away as Kazakhstan and - Malaysia's doctors and surgeons are getting more and more international recognition for their work.

| From Humble Beginnings As a fresh practicing doctor, Dr Ruslan accepted a district posting to Segamat in Johor. "In the 80's Johor Bahru was still a rural area and it was there in Segamat that my interest in orthopaedic surgery developed as I treated many orthopaedic cases from accidents and so on," he said. Dr Ruslan went on to do his Masters Degree with a specialisation in Orthopaedics. He also specializes in hip, knee and shoulder surgery, and he has joined a third-level Fellowship Programme in Ohio, USA. His forte is joint replacement surgery and he has been teaching medical students at his alma mater, UKM. Although he is in private practice at Tawakal Hospital, his passion for the subject has made him a sought-after lecturer at post-graduate courses at several local universities. "The initial years were very, very tough as I had to juggle my work, studies and family, but I'm glad I pushed through because I wouldn't be where I am today," he shared. "I am also proud to say that my peers (other orthopaedic surgeons) recognize my work and they have been coming to observe my operations." he said, to Dr Ruslan, that is the best 'reward' - when he is recognised by other surgeons in his field.
