JOHOR BARU: KPJ Healthcare Bhd is investing RM200mil to build three new hospitals and RM100mil in new medical equipment and expanding its existing hospitals nationwide this year.
Chairman Tan Sri Muhammad Ali Hashim said works on the Bandar Baru Klang Specialist Hospital, as well as Pasir Gudang Specialist Hospital and Muar Specialist Hospital – both in Johor have already started and are due for completion by the end of 2011. He said apart from opening at least two new hospitals yearly, the company would also continue to invest in new equipment, refurbishments and upgrading its existing facilities when the needs arise. “We want to ensure our hospitals and services remain at par with international standards,†Ali said in a press conference after the company AGM on Monday. |

| He said the number of outpatients receiving treatment at its hospitals nationwide had increased in the last five years from 1.16 million in 2005 to 1.55 million (2006), 1.73 million (2007), 1.95 million (2008) and 1.97 million in 2009. Ali said the number of inpatients had also grown from 117,539 (2005), 158,412 (2006), 179,227 (2007), 196,291 (2008) and 206,907 (2009).
He said the company would also focus on attracting more foreign medical
tourists.
“During the FY2009, over 15,000 foreigners received treatment at our
hospitals and in the 1QFY2010, we have received more than 5,000
foreigners of which 2,800 are Indonesians,’’ said Ali.
Managing director Datin Paduka Siti Sa’diah Sheikh Bakir said the
company welcomed the decision by Singapore Health Ministry to allow
Singaporeans to use Medisave savings for medical treatments at private
hospitals in Malaysia.
However, she said Singaporeans were free to choose where they want to
get their treatments and not only restricted to hospitals in which
Singapore companies have vested interest.

| Sa’diah said the company was unperturbed by the news that Khanzanah Nasional Bhd and Singapore’s Temasek Holdings were planning a wellness centre in Iskandar Malaysia as it would provide better choices to consumers. The company told Bursa that revenue rose 11% higher to RM376.05mil in 1QFY2010 compared with 1Q2009. Pre-tax profit climbed 20% year-on-year to RM38.04mil. For the year ended Dec 31, 2009, it posted RM114.73mil net profit on RM1.45bil revenue from RM89.30mil and RM1.26bil respectively in FY2008.
