KPJ Healthcare Bhd (5878), the country's largest operator of private specialist hospitals, expects to start seeing returns from its investment in KPJ Tawakkal Specialist Hospital in Jalan Pahang, Kuala Lumpur, within four years.

The group has invested as much as RM135 million to develop and equip the new hospital, scheduled to begin operations on July 1.
Under the first phase, KPJ Tawakkal will initially begin operations with 163 beds out of its capacity of 220 beds, with its specialist consultants offering services ranging from internal medicine, general surgery and a range of medical disciplines.

"The new hospital is the culmination of more than four years of planning and development," said KPJ managing director Datin Paduka Siti Sa'diah Sheikh Bakir.
KPJ Tawakkal has been included in KPJ's third real estate investment trust (REIT) programme.

Speaking to reporters at a briefing and tour of the new hospital yesterday, she said KPJ Tawakkal is expected to contribute up to 10 per cent to the group's revenue in the near future.

"We have not simply added more space to meet the growing needs of the existing Tawakkal Hospital. Instead, we have invested significantly to develop a new hospital that meets the needs of all segments of the market," she said.

The existing Tawakkal Hospital will be converted into an outpatient centre. It will also house a dialysis centre and a dental clinic.
Siti Sa'diah also said that the group will spend some RM200 million to open four new hospitals in the country this year and next as it focuses on healthcare tourism.

The group is in the midst of developing the Bandar Baru Klang Specialist Hospital in Selangor, the Pasir Gudang Specialist Hospital, Tanjung Lumpur Specialist Hospital and the Muar Specialist Hospital in Johor.

KPJ expects to reach the RM2 billion mark within two years, backed by openings of the new hospitals and its expansion in Indonesia. The group passed its RM1 billion revenue benchmark in fiscal year 2007 and continued to grow to RM1.27 billion a year later. It registered revenue of RM1.46 billion in 2009.
