KPJ Healthcare Bhd, the country’s largest operator of private hospitals, has moved a step further in the medical services industry with the opening of a RM2 million digital operating theatre at KPJ Tawakkal Specialist Hospital in Jalan Pahang.
Dubbed as the first of its kind in Malaysia, the new facility, with a dedicated navigation system, helps surgeons to achieve breakthrough in the field of orthopaedic surgery.
"It is in line with our efforts of becoming a centre of excellence in knee surgery, joint replacement and other orthopaedic services," said KPJ Healthcare managing director Datin Paduka Siti Sa’diali Sheikh Bakir.
Speaking to reporters at a media briefing in Kuala I .umpur yesterday, she said the facility will also serve as a platform for orthopaedic specialists to share their knowledge as well as to further healthcare education.
The digital operating theatre is a modern, ultra-clean operating theatre with full laminar, flow. which means that all bacteria, viruses or dust particles are extracted before the air enters the operating room.
"This navigation suite operating theatre is also wired to facilitate the transmission of live surgeries to other areas within the hospital. to other hospitals or elsewhere for continued medical education," she said.
Sill Sa’diah said KPJ Healthcare’s aim is to provide the best medical care and this includes investing in the latest technologies to enhance medical OUtCOITIPS and patient experience.
She believes patients will benefit greatly from the state-of the-art facility.
"We hope that it will also promote greater sharing of experience and expertise among the medical fraternity as well as enhance medical education in the country," she said.
KPJ Tawakkal’s medical director and consultant orthopaedic surgeon Dr Ruslan Nazaruddin said the computer-assisted knee navigation system functions like a surgical compass, which will help to significantly improve the outconie of orthopaedic surgeries.
"The knee navigation system helps surgeons to navigate where the cuts should be made and where the implants or grafts should be placed with greater accuracy," he said.
KPJ Uealthcare has invested as much as RM135 million to develop and equip the new hospital that started operations last July.
The group expects to reach the RM2 billioii-rnark within two years, backed by openings of new hospitals and its expansion in Indonesia.
It passed the RM1 billion revenue benchmark in fiscal year 2007 and continued to grow to RMI.27 billion a year later. KPJ Healthcare registered revenue of RM1.46 billion in 2009. By Azian Abu Bakar Alan@nstpcom My
