KPJ Healthcare Bhd has received approval for zoning from the Health Ministry to set up a new specialist hospital at Bandar Datuk Onn here.
Chairman Kamaruzzaman Abu Kassim said the 400-bed hospital would be developed in two phases and construction of phase one of the project would start by year-end.
He said phase one of the hospital with 150 beds to be located on 2.02ha-3.23ha would be completed in two years to be followed by phase two.
“We are currently finalising the details including the cost as the project is a collaboration between us and Johor Land Bhd,’’ Kamaruzzaman said at a press conference after the company’s AGM yesterday.
He said phase one would have a built up of 280,000 sq ft and upon completion, the hospital would have a built-up of about 500,000 sq ft.
Johor Land, a company under Johor Corp, is the developer of the 596.5ha Bandar Datuk Onn and the hospital facing the North-South Expressway is located within the 47.75ha regional commercial centre of the mixed development project.
Managing director Datin Paduka Siti Sa’diah Sheikh Bakir said that for a hospital of that size, it would cost RM1,000 investment per bed, excluding other costs such as medical equipment, land acquisition and other related costs.
She said the hospital would have centres of excellence which include the heart, geriatric centre, cancer, woman and child, cosmetic and reconstructive, orthopedic and related surgery centres.
“Apart from catering to locals, we are also targeting international medical tourists seeking treatment at private hospitals in Iskandar Malaysia,’’ said Siti Sa’diah.
She said the company would invest between RM50mil and RM80mil each to develop two new hospitals in Muar and Pasir Gudang, Johor (120 beds each) and an 180-bed hospital in Kuantan, to be ready within the next one to two years.
Siti Sa’diah said the company’s KPJ International University College Campus in Nilai, Negri Sembilan would start offering medical courses to local and foreign students within the next two years.
She said KPJ International College of Nursing and Health Sciences had recently received approval from the Higher Education Ministry to be a university college.
“We plan to collaborate with local and foreign universities in offering the medical courses,’’ said Siti Sa’diah, adding that the Nilai campus currently has 3,000 nursing and healthcare management students.
She said that upon expansion of the Nilai campus, the student intake would be increased to 5,000, and with the introduction of the medical courses, it would swell to 10,000 students.
For the financial year ended Dec 31, 2010, the company recorded a net profit of RM126.22mil on RM1.65bil revenue compared to RM114.73mil and RM1.45bil respectively in 2009. |
