KUALA LUMPUR: Kumpulan Perubatan Johor Sdn Bhd (KPJ), a subsidiary of KPJ Healthcare Bhd, has allocated RM32.8 million to build the first phase of its upcoming hospital in Kangar, Perlis.

Its managing director Datin Paduka Siti Sa’diah Sheikh Bakir said the hospital was a 60:40 collaboration with Yayasan Islam Perlis (YIPs).

"After almost a year of discussion, we have agreed to jointly develop the hospital which will be named Perlis Specialist Hospital and located in Pengkalan Asam, Mukim Seriab, Kangar," she said.

Under the joint venture, YIPs would provide a land measuring 4.3 acres for the hospital, while KPJ would leverage on its 30 years of healthcare experience to develop and provide its related services to the running and operation of the private specialist hospital.

The total cost of the hospital covering two phases of development, including building cost and medical facilities, would be estimated to amount to RM47 million. The first phase should be completed by December 2013 and opened to the public by January 2014.

Siti Sa’diah said KPJ was growing and looking to expand its network of healthcare services to various parts of the country.

"In 2010, KPJ recorded a revenue of RM1.7 billion. Besides that, KPJ’s market capitalisation, which is worth more than RM2 billion, has placed it among the 100 Bursa Malaysia listed companies with new market capitalisation record with KPJ’s market cap as of June 30, 2011 standing at a value of more than RM2.6 billion," she added.

The hospital in Kangar would be built under two phases with the first phase to offer the services of 60 hospital beds and the latest diagnostic equipment including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as well as a 64-slice computer tomography (CT) scanner and other latest medical equipment.

"The second phase will see the addition of 30 beds or more depending on the prevailing demand," Siti Sa’diah said in her speech at the signing of the agreement between KPJ and YIP here yesterday. "Indirectly, the state of Perlis will also see a significant development and a push for its other related industries while benefits are brought to the population of more than 50,000 in Kangar and the people living in other towns of Perlis," she said.

Also present at yesterday’s event was Menteri Besar Perlis, Datuk Seri Dr Md Isa Sabu, who is also chairman of YIPs.
