KANGAR: KPJ Healthcare Bhd, a leading private healthcare provider in Malaysia, is spreading its wings to build an eight-storey specialist centre in Pengkalan Asam, Perlis.

Construction of the Perlis Specialist Hospital, the first private specialist centre in the state, will begin in January, said Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Md Isa Sabu at the ground breaking ceremony for phase one of the project costing RM30 million.

He was confident the hospital would be able to make a mark in luring medical tourism given the state’s strategic location and growing population despite the fact that the Tuanku Fauziah hospital in Kangar is already serving patients from outstation.

KPJ managing director Datin Paduka Siti Sa’diah Sheikh Bakir said the 60:40 joint venture project with Yayasan Islam Perlis would be completed in two years and would serve some 240,000 residents in Perlis. The 900-bed specialist hospital will have three operating theatres, an intensive care unit, delivery room, physiotherapy facilities, accident and emergency unit and a 24-hour outpatient unit.

Currently, KPJ has 800 specialists serving more than two million out-patients and about 220,000 in-patients at 20 of its hospitals in Malaysia and two in Indonesia. Bernama
