IPOH: A baby boy became the fifth infant to be deposited at KPJ Ipoh Specialist Hospital’s baby hatch since the scheme started two years ago.

The two-day-old baby weighing 3.37kg was placed at the hatch at 9.45am on Wednesday, said ISH medical director Datuk Dr Fadzli Cheah Abdullah.

“The baby will be examined by a paediatrician before he is handed over to the Welfare Department,” he said in a statement here yesterday.

Dr Cheah said the hatch provided a safe environment for babies whose mothers were unable or unwilling to care of them.

“The babies are innocent and have a right to live. Many of them die in places like toilets and dustbins. If they are handed to us, we will take care of them in collaboration with the Welfare Department,” he said.

He said the hospital was the first under the KPJ Healthcare group to introduce the baby hatch system.
