JOHOR BARU: KPJ Johor Specialist Hospital and its Consultant’s Charity Fund recently brought some joy to four hardcore poor families in Taman Cendana, Pasir Gudang.

They donated RM200 worth of foodstuff in a hamper and RM100 in the form of ang pow when they visited the recipients at home.

The ang pow and hampers were presented by KPJ Johor Specialist Hospital Consultant’s Charity Fund chairman, Dr Ong Ah How.

Also present was Dr Mohd Mazri Yahya, the hospital’s indovascular surgeon.

The recipients were single-parent families, those without jobs due to poor health, and those with disabled children.

One 70-year-old recipient, who wanted to be known only as Juriah, has four children who are partially blind.

She herself is suffering from cataract disease and is unable to seek treatment as there is no one to assist her.

Another recipient Hasnah Abdul Majid, 43, has a son who is 33 years old and mentally ill.

She receives RM115 monthly aid from the Welfare Department while her son receives RM150 monthly.

She said she could barely survive with her monthly aid as her house rental takes up RM100 a month.

Another recipient, known only as Zainon and aged 53, has 10 children. She moved from Perak to Johor a few years ago with one of her daughters Fauziah, who suffers from a mysterious illness that causes a foul body odour. She has no income and depends on others to support her.

One 76-year-old recipient called Chong is suffering from asthma and is unable to work. His wife has to support the family by working as a kitchen helper in a hotel.

They have to care for their 11-year-old grandson who was allegedly abandoned by his parents.

Dr Ong said the Consultant’s Charity Fund members hope the donations would help to lessen the financial burdens of the recipients.

He said this was part of the hospital’s initiative in carrying out its corporate social responsibility.
