ABOUT 20 members of the Perak Media Sports and Welfare Club will embark on an expedition to scale Mount Kosciuszko from today to March 8.

The expedition, led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s press secretary Datuk Akmar Hisham Mohd Yusof, aims to promote tourism in Perak, in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year 2014.

“This is the first time that a delegation of press members from Perak are going overseas to promote tourism.

“It is their own initiative and I am proud of their efforts,” he said during the launching of the expedition at Impiana Hotel in Ipoh recently. “We will not only be scaling the mountain but will also give out brochures on places to visit in Perak at various tourist spots,” he said.

He added that Mount Kosciuszko was famous for its ski resort and the delegates could also promote the state’s tourism to tourists there.
The mountain, which stands at 2,228m above sea level, is located on the Snowy Mountains in Kosciuszko National Park, New South Wales.

It is said to be one of the easiest and “must-climb” mountains of the Seven Summits.

This would be the club’s third mountain hiking expedition, having scaled Mount Kinabalu in Sabah and Mount Rinjani in Lombok, Indonesia.

In his opening speech, state Youth and Sports Committee chairman Datuk Shahrul Zaman Yahya said: “I hope all expedition members will do their best during the hike.

“I also hope all the members will look after one another as a team to reach the summit safely.”

The sponsors for the expedition include the hotel, Emkay Land Group and KPJ Ipoh Specialist Hospital.
