KUALA LUMPUR -- Malaysian companies on the average fell rather short when benchmarked against international best practices on Corporate Responsibility.
Securities Commission chairman Datuk Zarinah Anwar in her speech at the StarBiz-ICR Malaysia Corporate Responsibility Awards said while there were leading public-listed companies (PLC) which came close to international best practices, there were still significant differences across the board.
Zarinah, who was the chief judge for the event, hoped the awards and survey done would enhance awareness and be a catalyst to further improve corporate responsibilities amongst PLCs in the country.
"In general, the survey revealed significant differences in the efforts of PLCs in integrating responsible practices across their business. While the leading PLCs came close to international best practices, on average, companies assessed fell rather short.
"Much work therefore, remains to be done. It is certainly my hope that the enhanced awarenes created by the survey and the awards would contribute towards catalysing efforts at improvements," she said.
The Raja Muda of Perak Raja Dr Nazrin Shah, who attended the event, presented the awards in four different categories -- Marketplace, Workplace, Environment and Community -- which were also separated, according to above RM1 billion and below RM1 billion market capitalisation.
The winners for the respective categories below RM1 billion market capitalisation were KPJ Healthcare Bhd (marketplace), Faber Group Bhd (workplace), Tex Cycle Technology (M) Bhd (environment) and Opus Group Bhd (community).
For companies with more than RM1 billion market capitalisation, Nestle managed to bring home two awards for marketplace and community, while Telekom Malaysia Bhd bagged the workplace award and Chemical Company of Malaysia Bhd, the environment award.
