The Star - Seven companies were honoured for their exemplary corporate responsibility (CR) initiatives at the inaugural StarBiz-ICR Malaysia Corporate Responsibility Awards 2008.

KUALA LUMPUR: Seven companies were honoured for their exemplary corporate responsibility (CR) initiatives at the inaugural StarBiz-ICR Malaysia Corporate Responsibility Awards 2008.
For companies with market capitalisation of RM1bil and above, Nestle (M) Bhd bagged awards in the marketplace and community categories, Telekom Malaysia Bhd in the workplace category and Chemical Company of Malaysia Bhd in the environment category.
For companies with market capitalisation below RM1bil, the winners were KPJ Healthcare Bhd (marketplace category), Opus Group Bhd (community), Faber Group Bhd (workplace) and Tex Cycle Technology (M) Bhd (environment).

Raja Muda of Perak Dr Raja Nazrin Shah presented the awards to the winners.
The event was jointly organised by Star Publications (M) Bhd and the Institute of Corporate Responsibility Malaysia (ICRM).
Star Publications group managing director and chief executive officer Datin Linda Ngiam said the awards were introduced with a strong interest and commitment to encourage responsible business practices.
“The focus is on how businesses can be responsible in the way they make money and not just what to do with the money once they made it,” she said.

In the spirit of CR and the generous support from the business community, Ngiam said, the surplus contribution from the event would be donated to the paediatric units of the Ipoh General Hospital and the Kuala Lumpur Hospital in the form of medical equipment.

ICRM chairman Datuk Johan Raslan said a sound CR agenda would influence how a company made its money and it was not all about “giving back to society”.

“A responsible CR approach in a company’s business strategies can help reduce cost, mitigate risks, improve reputation, motivate employees, drive innovation and boost performance,” he said.

About 500 people comprising corporate leaders and non-governmental organisations such as the Earth Institute and Environmental Quality Council Malaysia attended the event.

The working partners for the awards are the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, PricewaterhouseCoopers and Securities Industry Development Corporation with support from Securities Commission (SC) and Bursa Malaysia Bhd.
The judges were SC chairman Datuk Zarinah Anwar, Bursa chief executive officer Datuk Yusli Mohamed Yusoff, EQCM chairman Datuk Kok Wee Kiat, Earth Institute director Prof Jeffrey Sachs and Universiti Malaya vice-chancellor Datuk Rafiah Salim.
