IPOH: Hospital staff must treat their duties as a religious obligation so that they would be rewarded in the after life, Sultan of Perak Sultan Azlan Shah said.
The Ruler said that hospital staff should offer their services to the public sincerely.
“Treat all patients with a sincere smile and give them the best quality of work.
“This will undoubtedly result in the patients’ belief and confidence in the hospital,” he told the hospital staff of KPJ Ipoh Specialist Hospital during the launch of its new wing here on Tuesday.
He added that the role of private hospitals in providing specialist treatment and modern medical facilities is extremely important.
“As government hospitals provide medical services, private hospitals too can join hands in sharing their experiences by giving the best medical treatment to the people,” he said.
Earlier, KPJ Healthcare Bhd chairman Tan Sri Muhammad Ali Hashim said the construction of the new wing had cost the hospital some RM31.5mil.
“We have increased our bed capacity from 210 to 280 and we also now have a total of 42 medical consultants and about 700 staff members,” he said.
He added that the 27-year-old hospital had started with only 14 medical consultants and 80 patient beds when KPJ Healthcare took over in 1989.
“In the new wing, we are also fully equipped with modern facilities like the new radiotherapy treatment services and the use of a ‘linear accelerator’ that cost us some RM9mil,” he said.
The new wing, added Muhammad Ali, also housed 50 consultant clinics, three wards and a commercial space.
He said that in 2007, the hospital had treated 194,999 patients with 18,271 of them being warded.
“Also in line with the concept of healthcare tourism, since 2006, a total of 1,015 patients from Medan had received outpatient treatment here while 98 had been warded,” he said.
Muhammad Ali added that KPJ Healthcare currently has 18 specialist hospitals in Malaysia, three in Indonesia, two in Saudi Arabia and one in Bangladesh.
