IPOH: HOSPITAL staff have been urged to be sincere when treating patients and take their duties as a religious obligation.

Officiating at the opening of a new wing of KPJ Ipoh Specialist Hospital yesterday, he said the role of private hospitals in providing specialist treatment and medical facilities was important.

“As government hospitals provide medical services, private hospitals too can join hands in sharing their experiences by giving the best medical treatment to the people,” he said.

KPJ chairman Tan Sri Muhammad Ali Hashim said the new wing cost RM31.5mil and had increased the bed capacity from 210 to 280.

He said the 27-year-old hospital started with only 14 medical consultants and 80 beds when KPJ took over in 1989.
“Now it has 42 consultants and 700 staff members,” he said.

The new wing also has 50 consultant clinics, three wards and commercial space.

He said the hospital received over 190,000 patients last year with some 18,000 being warded.

“In terms of healthcare tourism, 1,015 patients from Medan have been seeking treatment here since 2006,” he added.
Muhammad Ali said KPJ had 18 specialist hospitals in Malaysia, three in Indonesia, two in Saudi Arabia and one in Bangladesh.
